Official groundbreaking ceremonies for a dedicated, new practice facility for the University of Connecticut’s championship men’s and women’s basketball programs were held Tuesday (April 16) on the site of the facility’s home behind Gampel Pavilion on the Storrs campus.

The event, which occurred a week after the Huskies brought home their eighth national title, tying Tennessee for the most wins in women’s basketball history, was attended by officials from the University, the UConn Foundation, by alumni and donors and by several present and former players, as well as students.

“This is a landmark day for UConn,” said UConn President Susan Herbst. “Our coaches and athletes have made UConn basketball the envy of the nation. They earned this facility with their hard work and their dedication.”

Bell collectors and enthusiasts will meet in East Hampton, CT for a day of fun and special programs.

The New England Chapter of the American Bell Association International INC.  will hold its Spring 2013 meeting from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, April 27 at Angelico’s Lake House Restaurant, 81 North Main St. in East Hampton.

The public is invited to enjoy a day of displays, bell sales, and educational programs.

A preregistration fee of $15 includes lunch and must be received by April 17 (late registrations will be accepted if space allows).

Eleven family members of those killed in the December 2012 shooting at the Newtown, CT Sandy Hook Elementary school joined President Barack Obama on an Air Force One flight from Connecticut to D.C. after Obama’s speech at the University of Hartford on Monday (April 8).

“The families of Newtown literally turned the tide in Washington, D.C.,” Sen. Richard Blumenthal said at a press conference at the University of Hartford on Friday (April 12). “Their faces and voices are an historic story in achieving better measures against gun violence.”

In all, 16 Republicans contributed to Thursday’s (April 11) 68-31 bipartisan victory over the Republican-led filibuster that would have prevented debate on the legislation.

Devil’s Hopyard State Park, in East Haddam, Connecticut, was a hot topic a year ago.

A fire that burned about 150 acres of the park kept local and state firefighters busy for quite a few days and even held the attention of news organizations for more than 24 hours.

A week after the embers and risk for rekindles died, my husband and I hiked along the orange trail to the vista to observe the fire’s aftermath.

The contrasts were striking. It was easy to see where the fire was the hottest – along upward slopes – and where it simply burned the leaf litter.

UConn Athletics today (April 11) unveiled a new version of the Husky logo.

UConn Athletics has been working with Nike to evaluate all parts of its brand, including word marks, logos and uniforms, for the past 14 months.

The new Husky Dog logo will be featured on uniforms for every one of UConn’s 24 athletic programs in 2013-14 and each of those uniforms will also prominently display the block UCONN word mark outlined in red.

On April 8, 2013, shortly before 3 p.m., the Old Saybrook Police Department responded to a report of an armed robbery at the Days Inn on Boston Post Road in their town.

Police were told there were two armed male suspects.

Old Saybrook Police Officers spotted a vehicle leaving the area which then engaged in a pursuit. State Police troopers were called for assistance.
