Skylar Diggins came up with the biggest steal of the game, curtailing the UConn momentum that had seen Maya Moore score a total of eight points on the previous three possessions. At that point, the Huskies were within three and turning the theft into a 67-60 lead with 1:35 to play.

In the high jump, Hultzman tied for fifth place (4-11 3/4) and Gingras was eighth (4-10 1/4). Huhn was fifth in the pole vault (9-0 1/2).

While being interviewed after the game, Coach Geno Auriemma was interrupted by a phone call from President Obama.

Junior Dave Teggart had just kicked a 52-yard field goal with 17 seconds left in the game to give UConn a nail-biting 19-16 win, a share of the Big East title and the program’s first trip to a BCS Bowl game.

It looked like the Huskies would pour it on when, on their next possession, they drove to the Rutgers one with 24 seconds to go in the half.

During a frantic second quarter, the two teams traded touchdowns like they were ping-pong points and after the dust had settled, the game was tied 21-21 at halftime.

“Thank goodness, it worked out well for us and Cody did what he did. If I have to do again what I did at halftime today, I’m not going to live much longer,” said Edsall who wouldn’t divulge what he had said to his moribund players at halftime when they were tied with a much less talented opponent.

The program was formerly known as the Portland Panthers. About two years ago, Senick said, the program changed names, “because we wanted to start bringing in more kids from East Hampton.”

Almost 400 undergrads took advantage of the network’s largesse and all was going well until midway through the third quarter, with the Owls leading 14-13, when the large screen suddenly went black…. and stayed that way for 45 minutes.
