“The Benny Fund will sponsor the second annual Benny’s Run (5K & Kids Fun Run) on October 04, 2014. We welcome all runners, walkers, and volunteers of all ages.
Benny’s Run was established in 2013, in remembrance of Benjamin J. Neiweem, an EHHS graduate. As an avid runner and outdoorsman, his family and friends want to celebrate his life, and support our community, through this run and fundraiser. All proceeds raised will go directly to The Benny Fund, an East Hampton, CT based non-profit 501(c)(3) organization.
What is the Benny Fund? We strive to ensure mental illness is spoken about openly at our dinner tables, in our schools, and as a community. The stigma associated with depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, as well as other mental illnesses is not only real, but acts as a barrier to seeking treatment. Mental illness is treatable and early intervention is crucial. Those who are affected should be treated with compassion, understanding, and care. Our mission is to support our communities through funding and mental health advocacy, while remembering a caring and loving man, Benjamin J. Neiweem. In May 2014, The Benny Fund awarded its first scholarships and plans to continue to focus on scholarships for high school students, mental health advocacy campaigns, as well as funding for mental health education in our schools and communities.
