Presentation On Moodus War Hero, Melvin Baron
Both the Hadlyme Congregational Church and the North School of Hadlyme are sponsoring a talk about a World War II veteran from Moodus named Melvin Baron, who was killed in action in Italy 70 years ago on May 4, 1944, at the age of 19. Pvt. Baron, a 1943 graduate of Hale-Ray High School, was part of an elite special services unit in the Army. It was jointly formed with Canadian troops and was called the “First Special Services Force.” The unit can be thought of as the forerunner to modern special forces such as the Green Berets and the Seals.
Historian, published author, and retired teacher Philip R. Devlin of Higganum will give the presentation. The talk will be held in the Hadlyme Congregational Church from 4-5 p.m. on November 8th–Veterans Day weekend. It will be followed by a question and answer period and then dinner from 5-6:30. Tickets are $15 and will be available this Fall. Look for further information about obtaining tickets at this website soon.
