One consolation for all the Back-to-School ads that signal the end of summer – already? – is the beginning of fair season. Who doesn’t love these fried-dough, tractor-pulling, livestock-filled annual events?
One of the largest and most popular is just around the corner, the 2013 Haddam Neck Fair, which runs from Friday, Aug. 30 through Monday, Sept. 2, at the Haddam Neck Fairgrounds, 26 Quarry Hill Road, Haddam Neck (Rt. 151 East Hampton CT)
A schedule of all the events – from the skillet-throwing and beard contests to live music and the Haddam Neck Fair 5K Road Race (and so much more!) – is available online at the official site http://www.haddamneckfair.com
You can also pick up a program guide at the information booth, located near the blue and white poultry barn and the outdoor dining area. You can also buy souvenirs here, and there will be helpful staff to answer your questions.
All four days, enjoy rides, fair food, the petting zoo, displays, a circus and children’s contests.
General admission is $8, seniors (65 and older) pay $7; a 3-day pass is $20 ($18 for seniors); a weekend pass (that includes Friday night) is $28 ($25 for seniors). Children under age 12 are admitted free of charge. Parking is free.
No pets, please
As the organizers states, “No matter how cute or well behaved, leashed or not, pets are not allowed on the Fairgrounds during the Fair! Nor may they be left in parked vehicles.”
(Editor’s note: Please, never leave your pets – or small children – in a car with the windows partially open. Even under those conditions, temperatures will still increase to the level where they can cause brain damage or even death.)
Did you know other events are held at the Haddam Neck Fairgrounds? Coming up on Sunday, Aug. 18, for example, is the British Ironworks Association Motorcycle Show, from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (Admission is $10). You can read more about that event here http://www.ctbritiron.org/index.html
The Haddam Neck Fair is managed by a board of directors elected annually. The current board consists of: Dianne McHutchison – President; Bob McGarry – Vice President; Amy Casey – Secretary; Betty LaBella – Asst. Secretary; Susan Rutty – Treasurer; Sue Olsen – Asst. Treasurer; Jeff Beebe, Frances Dallas, Mark Dumond, Deborah Olsen, Wayne Rutty, Angie Sarahina, Randy Spencer, Michael Stevens and David Tozier.
