Rep. Ziobron asks help to save state park

One of my priorities since taking office has been to enact a plan to get Sunrise State Park cleaned up and back into safe condition so people can once again enjoy it as a recreational resource, without fear of getting hurt or injured.
To that end, I proposed a bill that has been brought forward with new language as a committee bill, scheduled for a public hearing in the Environment Committee this Friday, March 8, 2013.
We cannot let this opportunity go to waste, so I am urging you to testify before the committee and tell the legislators how important this local treasure is to you. Please, share in your own words why this piece of property deserves to be a priority in our region.
While testimony is most effective when it is personally read to the committee during the public hearing, you are also able to submit testimony for the record without attending.

Rep. Ziobron originally proposed a bill that would amend Connecticut General Statutes to “require the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection to develop a plan for the use of the Sunrise State Park that ensures the safety of the premises.” The bill now before the Committee, Raised H.B. No. 6539, would require, “the Commissioner of Energy and Environmental Protection to report to the General Assembly on the former Sunrise Resort in East Haddam.”
According to the DEEP, Sunrise Resort originally opened in 1916 as Elm Camp when Henry Engle completed the Main Bungalow by installing electric lights, telephone and a water system. In 1986, the Robert Johnson family took ownership and managed it until 2008. DEEP purchased the 143-acre property in January 2009 for $3.2 million and has since been trying to find a developer to bring what is now a state park back into use as a regional recreational resource.
