If you need shelter

October 29, 2012 Local News No Comments

The impact of Hurricane Sandy will be less severe than on the shoreline, but there is widespread potential for power outages in rural areas such as East Hampton.

Residents in need of emergency shelter can call 860-267-9922 to find out if the town has opened the high school for this purpose.

As an alternative, a Red Cross Shelter is available in Colchester at Bacon Academy at 611 Norwich Avenue.

Town officials are monitoring Hurricane Sandy’s local impact from the Emergency Operations Center at the Barton Hill Firehouse.

CL&P has asked for reports of power outages, by calling 860-947-2000.

If there is downed wire in your area, or if someone is injured or there’s a fire, please call 911.

As of 5:45 p.m., an estimated 186,000 homes were without power – a significant number of those along the southern coast of Connecticut.

Editor’s note:

If you know of someone who is elderly and/or homebound and phone service is operational in your area, please make contact to determine if the person has taken proper precautions or is in need of assistance – it is not advisable to leave your home, but you can report any emergency via 911 for that individual, and it may be possible to offer other assistance tomorrow after the storm subsides.
