East Hampton to welcome two returning servicemen July 6

Two returning service members will be greeted by East Hampton residents on Friday, July 6. A Welcome Home Ceremony will be held in the Village Center at 6:30 p.m., at the Yellow Ribbon Tree, for Navy 3rd Class Petty Officer Cody Flannery and Navy Seabee Christopher Abbott.

A Welcome Home Ceremony will be held in the Village Center at 6:30 p.m., at the Yellow Ribbon Tree, for Navy 3rd Class Petty Officer Cody Flannery and Navy Seabee Christopher Abbott.

Both have been serving in Afghanistan.

Yellow ribbons inscribed with their names and tied to the tree will be removed at the ceremony.

Welcomers are encouraged to bring flags to wave as these heroes return home.

Parking will be available at the Congregational Church parking lot.

According to a press release issued by the Yellow Ribbon Committee, Abbott joined the Navy in May 2008 and then reported to Great Lakes, IL in September for seven weeks of basic training. He then attended Sheppard Air Force Base in Texas for six months to train in the “A” school Convoy Security Element.

He spent six months in Spain, one month in Morocco, three weeks in Surinam and two months in Guyana. He was trained in Urban Warfare Skills and deployed to Afghanistan in January from Gulfport, MS.

The release also states that Flannery underwent10 weeks of basic training in Great Lakes, IL and spent 18 months at the Naval Station to attend “A” school to become an electronic technician.

He was then stationed in Norfolk, VA for “C” school in Communication Security and then to join the Naval Mobil Construction Team Battalion in Gulfport, MS where he specialized in Communication Security Maintenance before being deployed to Afghanistan.
