East Hampton CT Police provided this photo taken from a surveillance video of a man they say tried to steal a cash machine at a car wash on March 25, 2012.

East Hampton Police are investigating the attempted theft of an automated cashier machine at a car wash on Route 66.

The attempt occurred on March 25, 2012 at about 9:05 p.m., according to police.

They also say surveillance tapes show the suspect to be a white male wearing a dark-colored hoodie (with the hood up), jeans and boots.

Police say the suspect was wearing white socks over his hands and a surgical mask over his mouth and nose. He was also carrying at least 2 pry bars.

The tapes show the suspect walking from the south side of the car wash toward the bay where the damage occurred.

Police say the suspect did not succeed at stealing the machine or money from it; however, he caused approximately $8,000 in damage in the attempt.

Anyone with additional information can contact Officer David Gionfriddo at 860-267-9922.
