Smith’s litter frog, Leptobrachium smithi, identified in 1999, is one of five newly identified frogs. Found in the Indian state of Assam, it measures a few centimeters. Populations of the frog are in decline due to tree-cutting, polluted streams and other human activity. WWF photo.

A report released today by the World Wildlife Fund, “The Eastern Himalayas – Where Worlds Collide,” includes identification of the world’s smallest deer ( 25-inches tall) and the first new primate (a macaque) to be found in more than a century.
