$1.2 million Sears Park plan outlines ways to increase use and protect the lake

Proposed Sears Park plan - from Ferrero Hixon Associates. -----
A $1.2 million landscape plan for upgrading Sears Park was presented to the Town Council by architect Christopher J. Ferrero, a partner in Ferrero Hixon Assoc. LLC based in Simsbury.
The three-acre, town-owned park lies on the west shore of Lake Pocotopaug.
Ferrero said the proposed plan is designed to maximize the use of the beach front, open the center of the park by grouping uses, mitigate storm water runoff, improve traffic flow by creating one-way traffic, add more parking, improve enforcement of parking rules, and add educational opportunities in terms of the environment and the town’s history.
The design also increases the size of the beach area - which involves removing the existing jetty - and building a new bathhouse. And dealing with the goose droppings.
One of the more common criticisms from residents who responded to a survey regarding Sears Park improvements is that the sandy area is too small, too rocky and often full of trash.
Some residents also suggested making more use of the park as a town green, i.e., “Would love to see open-air markets held here as well as other community functions. Without a town green, this is the only space available.”
Grouping uses
The plan divides the park into four areas:
One area, at the southwest corner of the park, would be designated for basketball (including a new court), tennis and a skate park.
Another area, at the northwest end of the park, would include a new boat launch, parking for 17 boat trailers, and a picnic area,
Along the beach front itself, there would be an expanded picnic area (near the pavilion) and a play area for toddlers (As one survey respondent said, “This town has a need for indoor play for young children. There are very limited services [in] East Hampton for young children under the age of 5 to have recreational play. Considering the number of families with young children, the Parks & Recreation Department should figure out how to accommodate this age group.]
One of the advantages of grouping uses, Ferrero said, is to open “a lot of new real estate” in the center of the parcel, which creates the possibility of constructing an amphitheater (bandshell).
One-way traffic
The park would have a single entrance off of North Main Street, at the south end of the property. The boat launch area and beach would be accessed from an interior road.

Proposed one-way traffic plan with interior road - from Ferrero Hixon Associates.
The exit road would lead to the north end of the park.
The plan will now go to the Parks and Recreation Commission for its comments, and will be presented at a public information session, not yet scheduled.
Town Manager Jeffrey O’Keefe also was asked to prepare an implementation plan outlining a timeline for the project’s components.

Don’t even think about taking away one of the two tennis courts. If it ends up that way, I’ll play tennis on that silly skate park - just as the town’s skateboards roll around on the high school courts as 3 people are playing matches.
Comment made on June 16th, 2009 at 8:31 pmThe town spent all kinds of money to improve the boat launch. Now they want to move it. More money down the drain. Also, now that the Lake House uses Sears Park for their Valet parking no parking sticker on the cars, there will be no room for the townspeople who will be footing the 1.2 millon dollars and who have to purchase a sticker to use the park.

Comment made on June 17th, 2009 at 10:13 amI’ve been told that the courts at the high school are hardly ever used. How about you play tennis on one of the empty courts and we provide a safe place for kids to skate that is out in the open where it needs to be? Why can’t we all just get along? Good grief.
I agree with Mary, the boat launch was just redone, and now they want to move it??? That’s not good planning. 1.2 Million we’d have to pay for? They should concentrate on paving roads in this town, not redoing a park that is fine as it is. The roads in E.Hampton are deplorable in some areas. This is where the money should be going.
Comment made on June 17th, 2009 at 1:32 pmThe lake is beautiful and the more we expand the more problems we’ll have with pollution, and other problems that will arise with so much going on is such a small area. Small town is what E.Hampton is and it should be left that way!
To Parent: I play at Sears Park because your kid is too busy skating all over the high school courts while people are actively playing tennis. Didn’t I already mention that?

Comment made on June 18th, 2009 at 12:34 pmMy kids don’t skate, but if they did, I would expect them to respect others. As an evidently intelligent adult, you should know better than to stereotype based on a few.
Can’t we all just grow up? My husband plays tennis and my son skateboards. How many tennis courts do we have in town? 4-6? How many skate parks do we have in town? 0 !!!
I am truly sorry if some kids are skating on the courts at the high school and I do not condone the activity; I will be speaking to some of the skaters I know about this. But for (Idontthinkso) to say they are going to play tennis on the skatepark is just plain immature. You are supposed to be the grown up? Do you remember the saying “Two wrongs don’t make a right?”
Please let’s grow up and set good examples for our youth! These are great kids, take the time to get to know them.
Comment made on June 18th, 2009 at 1:27 pmEveryone keeps griping about kids skating and BMXing at his location, and grinding this rail, and jumping off these stairs. It is going to keep happening unless they are given a safe place to skate/ride.
The fact is, the action sports community is growing in leaps and bounds…these kids aren’t going away…their numbers are growing!
Tennis, seriously? It’s 2 or 4 people playing on a court that measures something like 80′ x 30′ and there are 5 courts in town! Do the math, that’s over an acre of land dedicated to tennis, yet the town wants to stick dozens of skaters and bikers in 1 “tennis court sized area”. We’re getting shafted here, not you tennis lovers losing 1 lousy court!
Comment made on June 18th, 2009 at 4:17 pmThey didn’t rebuild the boat launch (the ramp actually putting the boat into the water). It is the same one that’s been there for years, and is in bad condition. The new master plan calls for building a new boat ramp further north.
All they did last year was tear down the fence between Sears park and the town-owned lot next to it to make the trailer parking bigger, basically just as prep work to allow the new master plan to be developed.
Comment made on June 19th, 2009 at 10:50 pmMy biggest wonder is how the town can get away with making people pay to use the park. Example being parking or launching a boat.
The documentation for the property from the Sears family strictly states the town can use the property ONLY so long as it’s free for town residents… why do I need to buy a sticker to park there? Ho hum
Comment made on June 30th, 2009 at 9:06 pmShow your address, use the park, ditch the silly extra cost. And add a horsepower limit. The lake is a sad mess.
Comment made on September 19th, 2009 at 12:30 pmThe park is free to anyone who walks right up to it. Heck, if you can walk your boat (such as a small dingy) in, that would be free too! Parking is a service. You can charge for services - else they’d be giving free food at the concession stand!
Comment made on September 21st, 2009 at 1:55 amTwo things here. First is, why is the Lake House using our park for their private parties? I doubt their ‘guests’ are running down to the town hall for permits. So I, as a resident, have pay to get in Sears Park, and would get arrested for being there after hours, but a bunch drunken out-of-town yahoos from the Lake House can come and go as they please. Figures, the Lake House is the political rat’s den for East Hampton and above the law as per usual. Second, spend the 1.2 mil on buying the Fireman’s Grounds. Now that would be money well spent.
Comment made on November 8th, 2009 at 4:24 pmI think this is a great idea! Sears Park is so run down and devalues our town. Look at Marlborough Blish Park, it’s beautiful. We have one place for families in our town to go in the summer, so why not make it a great place!
