Using the natural warmth of the earth to cut energy costs

In Iceland, the main source of energy is geothermal. Because of the mid-Atlantic ridge, there is constant, volcanic activity beneath the surface in various parts of the country. As a result, there are huge amounts of hot water reservoirs in the ground. The water is generally 70-80°C. In this country, however, geothermal systems take advantage of a stable earth temperature, about 45º to 58º F, just a few feet below the surface.

Rick King is a regular on NPR where he shares his insights and answers questions relative to geo-thermal system installation, costs, utility savings and funding programs.
